Business Analysis and Specification

Projects don't go wrong, they start wrong...

Projects are either made or broken in the initial stages: detailed attention to the following will not guarantee success, but will give the project the best chance of succeeding:

  • Developing a solid business case - any project must pay its way over a defined period otherwise it's not worth funding.  If, at any point, it looks like a project will not achieve its business objectives then it must be reconsidered and either restructured or cancelled.
  • Fully engaging all stakeholders - these are the people who will realise the benefits of the project, if they are not completely engaged from the outset then the project's chances of success are considerably diminished.
  • Developing a detailed specification and testing this against the needs of the stakeholders - verifying assumptions and functionality before coding starts saves significant time and effort in the later stages of a project: once a project is developed, changes can be very costly and time consuming to implement.

Project/Programme Management

A good project manager will act like a catalyst on a project, ensuring that everyone is free to do what they do best as efficiently as possible.  In this respect good project management will often go unnoticed, except in the maintenance of deadlines and budgets, and the smooth delivery of the project to an exceptional level of quality.

If a project manager is seen to be constantly rallying the team and valiantly sorting out a raft of overwhelming problems, this is usually a sign that the project has already gone out of control at some point.

It's much easier, and much more efficient, to get things right first time than to let them go wrong and then try to sort out the mess.

In practice, projects are constantly threatening to go out of control in a number of ways both large and small: a skilled project manager will be:

  • Efficient in dealing with planned activities
  • Proactive in the identification and mitigation of risk
  • Calm, determined and thorough in dealing with the unexpected

Good project management does not guarantee success, but it will considerably increase its likelihood.

Projects don't go wrong, they start wrong...

Too many projects flounder when the team is too hasty to start the 'real' work of development at the expense of analysis and specification.

A good deal of the hard analytical work has to be done up front if a project is to stand any chance of achieving its objectives: changing a few lines of specification can take minutes, changing a few lines of code may result in months of reworking and retesting.

Poor specification often results in technically efficient but practically unusable solutions - nobody, for example, would get very far using a calendar in which each month had exactly 30 days however easy it made the coding.

Creating genuinely usable solutions requires much more detailed and careful work at the specification stage in order to ensure that a realistic and accurate blueprint is presented to the developers.
